Races organised by Elswick Harriers

Good Friday Road Races
This popular event has been held for over thirty years in the West End of Newcastle but due to ever increasing traffic the races have been moved to the Newburn Riverside Park. There are seven different events with ages ranging from 11 years to 60 years. The four times 2.2 mile senior event on the Fenham course was the highlight of the programme and the course record of 9 minutes 46 seconds set by Mike McLeod in 1977 will now never be beaten.

Newburn River Run
This six and a half mile mid week race is held on the second or third Wednesday in June, and from humble beginnings in 1981 it has grown into a very popular summer evening run. Starting at Newburn Leisure Centre the run takes in the old Railway line from Newburn to Wylam passing the birthplace of George Stephenson. The runners then make their way over Wylam Bridge before heading back to Newburn on the south side of the river finishing at the Leisure Centre. All competitors receive a free buffet supper as part of the entry fee.
