Within the first hour of the project, it proved necessary to abandon the hourly site updates, due to the lack of appropriate personnel and technological failures.

The WAP database, having been tested on several occasions, failed on the day. There are many reasons for this. The major problem being that each WAP phone appears to interpret the database differently. However, the situation was partially rescued by creating a page which demonstrates the database through two different WAP emulators. This page also links to how the data might look in an Excel spreadsheet which is downloadable from the page.

The GPS monitors are being used for waymarking as they, obviously, cannot track satellites from inside a bus!

GEOFF WALKER

Newcastle Civic Centre at 7:45 a.m. on a wet Tuesday morning can be a daunting place. The canyon like corridors of the almost empty 2nd floor echo to the sound of the footsteps of a lone Principal Officer, namely, Geoff Walker, as he ponders the tasks for the day.

The rest of the team was to arrive at 8.00 am, and it was now 7:50 am. Would they arrive on time?

Mike Riley was first, clutching coffee, closely followed by Joe Rowell. But would anyone else turn up, and would they be on time?

No problem!!!

In walks Steve Ramsey and Phil Lockyer, closely followed by Leon Maurice. That makes a full complement of staff.

Geoff outlines the process of gathering the information, and Steve, chatty as ever provides a welcome counterpoint to the grey weather. Where does he get the energy so early in the morning?

Now we can begin the briefing process.

The technology is daunting if you dont know what its about. Geoff explains what a GPS. system is. Those who know about cars know what a Global Positioning System is. Not my particular thing, but there you go.

Laptops and mobiles are a different thing altogether. I'm interested in them. Again Geoff explains the mysteries of the technology. We all nod in agreement, even though we dont know all of what he's talking about.

Someone suggested we needed a team photo to record the happy event and Leon is on hand to do the business. Team photos all round.

Stay tuned for more existing updates.!!!
