From 08.00 to 18.00 Hrs on Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th of September 2001, NEAT undertook an exciting and innovative two-day Internet-based Transport Monitoring Exercise in the Outer West area of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England.

Technologies used for this exercise were wide-ranging and included digital cameras, digital video, on-line surveys, wireless laptops, Global Positioning Systems (GPS) monitors and Wireless Assisted Protocol (WAP) telephones.

Here, you can find out more about the background to the project. The crew of specialists and fieldworkers who were involved plus how the hub of the project operated at Mission Control and the technology used in the exercise.

You can also use this site to explore the possibility of establishing a database for monitoring all forms of public service using mobile telephones and satellite systems.

You can also view the gallery of digital images and video collected during the two days; see hour-by-hour reports of events during the exercise. And, read stories from public transport users about their experiences during the exercise.

After all that, if you still have time! You could complete an on-line questionnaire about your personal public transport needs.
