In the Senior Womens event the club only had two competitors - EMMA Mc FARLANE was 8th overall out of the slow pack with JUDITH NUTT 17th running out of the fast pack. In the u/17 Mens event new member PHILIP HURST ran very well to end up in 7th spot even though he ran out of the fast pack in error! ANTHONY HARGREAVES was 13th overall. PAUL HESLOP was 44th  in the U/15 Boys race. CARL SLACK once again turned out in the U/13 Boys finishing 37th. The Senior Men fielded a team in their first season in Division 1. First home for the club was JOHN BELL in 55th spot with KEVIN STEPHENSON –71st. MARK McLEOD ran well out of the fast pack to end up in 75th place. Next home was MARK CARPENTER in 96th. PETER SLOAN running out of the slow pack was 128th - PAUL DODD was 139th, GARY RUTHERFORD - 147th, MARTIN CROWE ran well to finish 161st, and newcomer PHILIP COLVER - 164th. The event was again sponsored by WARBURTONS for which the club is greatly indebted. The race attracted a good class of runner at the sharp end with Great Britain international NICK McCORMICK winning easily in a time of 28:51. Good to see Ex-Elswick man DAVID ANDERSON , now of Belgrave Harriers coming through to gain second spot , with RYAN STEPHENSON in third place. A new name on the Womens trophy in ANGELA HIBBS of Claremont Road Runners.

The event itself was very successful due in no small way to the tremendous help from club members who helped to marshal this very difficult course, and the refreshments provided by the Ladies. As organiser I have received several complimentary E. Mails regarding the event which I feel reflects well on the club. The only problem on the horizon remains the ever increasing amount of traffic which is now using the park, and obviously needs to be looked at carefully.

North Eastern Counties Cross Country Championships
The following week saw the 101st. North Eastern Counties Cross Country Championships which were held for the first time at Herrington Country Park near Penshaw. This proved to be an excellent venue with the undulating course providing a real test of endurance for the runners. A huge turn out in the Senior Mens race with 274 finishers with the club coming home 6th Team. MARK McLEOD was first Elswick finisher in 19th place in 44:32 over the 12k. course. JOHN BELL finished 44th - 47:43, DAVID ARMSTRONG and PAUL DIXON - 57th and 58th in 49:00 and 49:12. STEVE WHITE ran solidly to be 71st. in 50:38 with HARRY MATTHEWS - 80th in 51:06. PETER SLOAN ran very well to finish in a creditable 144th in 54:36. In the Womens event JUDITH NUTT ran well to finish 9th in the 8k. event in a time of 37:14. YAM THIRU was 26th in 41:49. There was a very disappointing turn out from the younger members with only two other competitors in the U/17 Mens race over 6k. This race provided probably the performance of the day from PHILIP HURST who beat many more experienced athletes to finish 7th in 25:09 with ADAM SOUTHERN also running well to finish 25th - 27:12.  The poor turn out from the younger element is all the more disappointing in view of the hard work that is put in by the coaching staff at the club in particular MARTIN and TONY who give up lots of spare time for no reward.

Saltwell Road Races
The Saltwell Road Races took place in Saltwell Park on Sunday 17th December with the Senior Mens Race attracting 215 finishers. MARK McLEOD ran very well to gain 4th place in an excellent time of 33:18 with PAUL DIXON next home for the the club in 16th spot in 36:29. JUDITH NUTT narrowly beat JIM BELL home to finish 24th in a time of 37:38 to Jim, s - 37:39. ANDREW HARTLEY was 39th in 39:46.  A promising run from TONY MASSIE who finished 80th in 42:58 with ROB WILSON - 89th - 43:48. Elswick gained the first Veteran Mens Team Prize. Amongst the younger age groups only two competitors - CARL SLACK finishing 11th in the U/13 in 13:10 with PAUL HESLOP - 8th in the U/15 Event.
The Parlauts took place as usual on Boxing Day at the Centre, but the turn out from members was poor in the extreme! I realise that there was an event at North Shields, but frankly unless members are going to support club events it is not worthwhile expecting members to put the effort in to organise these occasions. Nevertheless there were 7 teams on the day with the combination of CALUM WATSON and TONY MASSIE proving too strong for the fast finishing ALAN JOHNSON and ANDREW GREENWELL. The Centre opened up for us and in the Prize Quiz which followed the succesful combination of the team of little pixies proved triumphant.

the parlaufs
The Parlaufs as mentioned were affected by the Pudding Run in which RYAN McLEOD ran well to finish a close second to Nick McCormick in a time of 15:53 over the 3. 4. Mile course.

...And FINALLY:
Congratulations to RYAN McLEOD on his first Senior England vest, running in a Cross Country international in Brussels before Christmas.

This is the final Newsletter of 2006 so it just remains for me to wish everyone at Elswick a happy and peaceful 2007.

...And FINALLY:
The clubs A.G.M. took place on Friday 22nd October and on a proposal from Harry Matthews COLIN BOLTON was appointed a Life Member of Elswick Harriers.
This was an honour that was richly deserved as Colin has served the club in all capacities for over 50 years, being Treasurer for 30 years alone. Colin is still a very active member, still regularly taking training sessions and being involved in the day to day running of the club. If any younger member needs a role model there can be no better example for them than Colin.

...And FINALLY:
To end on a sombre note the club lost one of its longest serving members when RIPPON HALL passed away at the age of 85. Rippon joined Elswick Harriers in the 1930s, when he competed with distinction in the shorter events such as 100 and 200 yards. Returning to the club after active service in the War he turned to coaching and inspired many athletes with his enthusiasm and knowledge, and was also a well respected local official attending meetings up till his death. Rippon always kept a keen interest in the club and will be sadly missed. Our condolences go out to his family at this time.

3418 recorded finishers

Mention must be made of BOB HOUSTON who has taken on the mantle of Race Organiser from JIM DEWAR with great success.

NEWBURN RIVER RUN
The 25th running of the clubs Newburn River Run was held on Wednesday 21st.June, and this year was held in conjunction with Newcastle City Council’s Longest Day event as part of the Year of Exercise and Sport. The club is indebted to the local authority for their assistance in staging the race this year. Their help enabled a record field for the 25th.anniversary of the race, with 351 finishers. The event was held on a blustery evening in the Tyne Valley with Morpeth Harrier and Commonwealth Games Bronze Medallist-MARK HUDSPITH leading from gun to tape finishing in a time of 33:54 with STEVE HORN as runner up in 35:18.LES ATKINSON OF Morpeth was 3rd. in 35:51.The first Woman home was also from Morpeth-JANE MOONEY in 42nd.place in 41:01, with ex-Elswick Harrier-SOPHIE MILBURN 2nd.in 41:37.Third spot went to HELEN ASTLEY of Heaton Harriers in 42:39.

The event went off smoothly thanks to the tremendous help from club members who turned out in force to assist. Competitors can be assured there won’t be the delay next year in getting Race Numbers before the start! Lessons have been learnt by the organiser.

...AND FINALLY

Our longest active member, our treasurer, COLIN BOLTON, was rewarded for all his work for the club at a surprise presentation at Newburn Centre when he was presented with a Four Minute Mile print containing signed photographs of the record holders from Bannister to El Guerrouj. Colin joined the club in 1955 as a boy, and apart from competing actively for Elswick Harriers for over half a century he has been treasurer for nearly 30 years. The print was handed over to a surprised Colin (pictured on the right) by Mike McLeod, our Olympic Silver Medallist.

The highlight of the day for the club was RYAN McLEOD running the fastest time of the day in the Senior Men’s Relay, covering the 2.28 Mile course in 10:39. It was good to see more of our youngsters competing in a club vest especially in the younger age groups. Full marks also to SUSAN NELSON for organising the U/11 age group race prior to the main event. As usual the co-operation from club members was first class and always gains favourable comments from other clubs. The catering side of the day was so successful we ran out of food!

...AND FINALLY

The secretary was very pleasantly surprised to be asked up during the ‘The Sport Newcastle Annual Dinner’ at the Newcastle Civic Centre to receive on behalf of the club the Team/Community Award sponsored by the City Council. I think it reflects well on all the hard work that is done at the club, and is a fitting tribute to all concerned.
Don`t forget the Good Friday Races results are now available on our web site.
