Elswick Harriers are proud of their tradition, being the oldest established club in the North East of England founded in 1889. Over the years we have discovered many successful athletes including three Olympians: Mike Mcleod, Alan Lillington and Alex Burns. Visit our History section to find out more.

Training Sessions and Club Membership

We also pride ourselves on being a friendly club and welcome people of all ages and abilities. Our training sessions are held at Newburn Leisure Centre (details of how to find us are listed below) on Tuesday and Thursday evenings 7.30pm tiIl 9.00pm. There are various groups with coaching available at all training sessions. Members also meet on Sunday mornings for a longer run.

If you are visiting this site and thinking about getting into running or if you are an established runner but have not joined a club, why not come along to one of our training nights where you will be given a warm welcome. Sports Massage
We also have a qualified Sports Massage Therapist, Alan Lattimer, who offers discounted rates on club nights - Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Athletics Events
Members compete in a very wide range of athletic activities throughout the year. In addition to popular mass events such as London Marathon and Great North Run; individuals and club teams participate in all the local and national road runs as well as track, field and cross country leagues in junior, senior and veteran categories. The club also organises its own races the Good Friday Relays, the Newburn River Run ( 6.5m ) in June and the Norman Woodcock Memorial 10km at Gosforth Park in December. How to Find Us
We are based in Newburn Leisure Centre, Grange Road, Newcastle Upon Tyne. The centre is situated on the edge of the Tyne Riverside Country Park and offers superb opportunities for off road and cross country training in a virtually traffic free environment.
Newburn is situated 5 miles west of the city centre and is easily accessible by both car and public transport. Leaving Newcastle take the A69 for Hexham turning off at Throckley then follow the signs for Newburn. Turn right at the traffic lights in Newburn then follow the signs for the Leisure Centre which is situated close to the river Tyne. Using public transport take the No. 21 bus from Eldon Square to Newburn Council Offices, the centre is situated at the bottom of the steep hill.
