  Introduction
Ability Training provides learning opportunities for people with a variety of disablilities that wish to expand their skills and knowledge. To this end, Ability training assesses their capabilities and addresses their learning needs, in a friendly enviroment. This also helps many gain the confidence they feel they need to go out into the work place, perhaps for the first time.

How We Got Started
Ability Training started life in 1993 as Project 227 - designed to give disabled people living in the west end of Newcastle a chance to learn about computers. After a short time, training in administration was added to the range of skills on offer. The project was funded by City Challenge up until 1997 when we joined with CSV Newcastle, whose ethos complemented the aims of the Ability Training i.e. to create opportunities for people to take an active part in the life of their community.

Since then Ability Training has carried on fulfilling the needs of more disabled people; utilising the skills of volunteers, increasing the number of trainees, upgrading IT equipment, extending its links on the internet and improving the range of courses and programmes available.

In addition, we also have an Art Group which has introduced an an artistic element to the training and helped improve communications and inter-personal skills. The group has worked with various different media such as paints, ceramics, collage, drawing and etching. The group is very popular and has been successful in producing highly imaginative work of an excellent quality.
