2007 Season
|
Bit of a wet one then! Another season gone and 2007 has got to go down as the wettest season ever. The 1st Team lost six games to the weather, as did the 2nd Team. One team in our league had an unprecedented eight games rained off out of 22. But did we enjoy it ? Of course we did…when it wasn’t raining. Who was new then? For change we had a couple of new faces. This season we welcomed Mark Dixon into the fold as our pro. Unlike our previous professionals he didn’t have to travel half way around the world to get here. Just from darkest Consett. Mark proved to be a very good bowler taking 31 wickets. Chris Darling joined us half way through the season from Tynedale to stiffen our middle order and played very well for us Our tame Aussie Aaron Payne rejoined us as an amateur and proved that he couldn’t score runs even when we didn’t pay him to! 1st Team… mid table comfort zone Finishing in seventh position was a good effort considering we almost got relegated in 2006. It is interesting to note that the rest of league cannot understand why we aren’t higher up. Perhaps if they stopped beating us? Our bowling attack has more variety than any other team in the league and we have the batsmen who can score the runs. It never seems to come together as often as it should, particularly the batting. But there is always next season. Another good season came from Dave Newton scored 480 runs, which included a first day century against Warkworth, and won the batting cup. Mark Dixon took the bowling cup taking 31 wickets at 16.35. Andy Dover scored 407 runs including a century against Chopwell. Nice to see Dave and Andy becoming fixtures in the league team. 2nd Team…league champions by a country mile and cup winners A very strong 2nd Team won their league at a canter losing only one game. The real challenge comes next year when they will be in a much stronger level of cricket, No reason why they should not do well. The Planet Cup was our once again. Batting honours went to Paul Loraine and bowling again to Gary van Doorn. Good to see some of the young player like Dean Robinson and Chris Fowler starting to fulfill their potential. Congratulations to Chris for becoming a regular in the league’s under 21 team. Junior Section …. plenty of interest in coaching.Junior team…. coaching session still very popular Over the last two seasons Dave Smurthwaite has done fantastic organizing and developing the junior section. Things were ticking along nicely until Dave turned up but he has taken it all up another level. You cannot get moved on a Sunday for kids, cars and parents. Groundsman still doing an excellent job. Our thanks again go to Paul Newton for putting in a lot of unpaid hours to make sure that the wicket continues to improve. The league now consider it good enough host representative matches but only if we get some sight screens. Potential sponsors please note.
