An informal, weekly club for isolated people affected by mental health problems

The Thursday Club provides an informal meeting place and outings for isolated people affected by mental health problems. It meets at the Quaker Meeting House, 1 Archbold Terrace, Jesmond on Thursday evenings throughout the year, except for August and two weeks over Christmas, when the Club does not run.

The Thursday Club was established in 1962. It has a membership of approximately 50 people of varying ages.

Activities include:

  • social evenings between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., with tea and coffee
  • trips to the cinema and theatre
  • day or evening outings to various venues, for example, the Metro Centre, Sunderland Illuminations and seaside resorts
  • annual barbecue
  • Christmas dinner
  • meal evenings
  • quizzes, pool, bingo and other games.

The Thursday Club is staffed by a mixture of Quaker volunteers and social workers from Newcastle City Council.
